Looking Back In Time - 2007 Complete Report

Pre Work

After reading an article in The Beacon News my wife asked that I read it as well.  I then called the Alpharetta PD and Office Joyner {from the story called me back}.  Tomorrow, on his day off, because of another call this AM from a family like ours, he is meeting us at 9 AM to go and visit and deliver food to these people.  The food is being delivered by the other family.  I am going along to literally size up the 5 adults that are in the article where Amy is shown in the tent.  We will then as a family go out and use the generous offering from all of us to help these folks out.  They have jobs...they just can't live in a house.  To think that when one of the earns enough money to get a cheap motel room so that they can all go take showers is amazing to all of us.

Report

We took on two families.  The first is Emilio and Lynn.  They are the ones that are a couple of months away from moving back into a place {apartment}.  They had lost their house to the subprime problems.  We bought them pots and pans, cookie sheets, silverware, place settings and more.  We dropped these things off with them first.  As we reached their tent we started singing 'Jingle Bells' and Emilio came out of the tent.  His wife had left for work 20 minutes earlier.  Joey, one of the original 6 in the article had come back as well.  We sang to the both of them and dropped off all the presents.  As Emilio talked with the kids to thank them he was in tears.  It was a great time with him.

We then trucked off to Costco to finish shopping for the blind man, Mr. West and his two sons, Jason and Adam.  We had bought them clothes {long johns, pants, warm caps, a set of new pajamas {a must from Santa Claus} and more.  We bought them some easy to cook canned foods {stews, soups, vienna sausages and more}.  We also bought another 5 gallon propane tank.  We also bought toothpaste, brushes, shampoos, trash bags, and such.  When I was there earlier in the week it was quite messy with lots of things thrown around so we bought some trash bags.  When we got there yesterday morning, it was all picked up.  We walked up with the first load singing 'Silent Night' and then I called Mr. Wests' name and he came out.  Out of the other tent came Jason, the one son that works.  He had just come home from working all night long.  Whilst Mr. West was getting ready to come out, we went with Jason to get another load of food.  When we got to the Suburban, we had an Alpharetta Policeman there wondering 'who's car is parked here.'  He called Jason by name and we introduced ourselves.  The cop was glad to know that we had been working with Officer Joyner to help them out.

We went back to the tents and dropped off the second load and Mr. West had brought out his guitar.  He then played 'Silent Night' on the guitar.  We all sang.  He then played 'Do You See What I see' and we tried to sing along.  We didn't know all the words...but it was fun.  They were very appreciative of the clothing and food and propane and more that we brought to them on this morning.

After we opened our presents last night as we put the kids to bed I asked JoJo and Zander both what the best part of the day was and they indicated that it was helping these people that were homeless.  Their prayers included 'the homeless' that we had helped.  JoJo was especially touched and in her prayers it showed.

Thank you for letting us do this project with the generous donations from all of us.  As we completed this yesterday AM we were very grateful to be part of a great family that cares not only about each other but about the true spirit of the season.  We felt honoured to be ones to execute the project this year.

I asked Hans and Emilie to express their feelings in this email so that you get a feeling of it from the kids.

Emilie {age 11}: Hi, I was really happy that we could choose to help these homeless people. When we got to the 1st family (the ones that are moving in to an apartment) I felt sad and happy at the same time. I was sad because no one could tell that people lived there so barely anyone could help them.  I was also sad because they only had a tent to sleep in and almost no food, they also didn't all fit in the tent because it was a 2 person tent and some had come back so there were 3 people living there. I was happy that they had almost saved up enough money to rent an apartment. I was also happy that we help them. The second family we visited  I was also sad and happy. Sad because they weren't able to move in to and apartment and they didn't have a bunch of money. The son that works is working today so he can get an extra 100 dollars for his family. The sons were crying because we brought them food, a radio, clothes, and other things they needed. The son that works was really happy when we asked him to help carry because we had so much. I was really happy that the father Mr. West (Mark) could play some songs on the guitar even though he is blind.  I was also happy that we could help them.  Have a Merry Christmas :)

Hans {age 14}: I really loved doing a service project this year. When my mom read the newspaper that had the article about the homeless people she went ah! When we were doing the service project it was almost a magical feeling. I really felt warm and good inside. I know that people say stuff like this all the time, but it is true. When we went to meet the people then they were really nice and thankful. Emilio even cried and when we went to the others then they were really appreciative of the food and such also. The first family had six people living in the camp and a two man tent so they had to hot bunk. When one left the bed then another would get in. one had to sleep outside at night because they didn't have room. this was a great year to do this project. It made all of us more aware of others around us. Merry Christma
